Let's seize the moment. Our cases have captured the attention of the public and elected officials. In Montana, state legislators backed away from legislation to strip lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents of civil rights protections after we intervened. In New Jersey, the state's largest newspaper editorialized, “Protect Transgender Job Rights,” in response to the lawsuit we filed on behalf of El’Jai Devoureau.
Here in New York, we have good news, too. In March, the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) passed the New York State Assembly’s Government Operations Committee in a bipartisan vote of 11 to 2. We need to make an impact in Albany so that GENDA - which would prohibit discrimination against transgender people in areas like housing, employment and public accommodations - can pass the legislature and Governor Cuomo can sign it into law. 78% of New Yorkers support passage of such a law. We need to do our part and let Albany know how important GENDA is to transgender equality.
On Monday, May 9th, please join our partners at the Empire State Pride Agenda for Equality & Justice Day in Albany to show support for transgender civil rights, marriage equality and LGBT health and human services funding. In order for Equality & Justice Day to reflect our full community, a strong show of force in support of transgender rights is crucial. Scholarships are available, but registration closes on Thursday, April 28th. Register now!
We need to make our voices heard in Albany because those who oppose LGBT equality and justice are not remaining silent. The anti-LGBT extremist organization “New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms” is lobbying against GENDA and calling it “The Bathroom Bill.” Our legislators need to hear from us, too. Register now for Equality & Justice Day on Monday, May 9.
