TLDEF Testifies Before NYC City Council on Challenges Facing Transgender People
On Tuesday, November 19, TLDEF joined several partner organizations, including the NYC LGBT Community Center and the NYC Anti-Violence Project, in testifying before the New York City Council on the issues and challenges facing the transgender community in New York City. Our testimony discussed the obstacles that transgender New Yorkers continue to face in finding jobs and health care, including New York State’s exclusion of coverage for transgender health care in its Medicaid program. It was critically important for TLDEF to offer this information to the City Council and its newly-elected members to ensure that transgender people and the difficulties facing them will be addressed by this legislative body when it makes future decisions on policies that directly impact the transgender community. We’ll continue to lend our expert voice to the local political discourse when such opportunities arise.
