How to Order Your Birth Certificate

To obtain a certified copy of your birth certificate, contact the vital records office in the state where you were born. Below are links to instructions on how to order your birth certificate for people born in the U.S.

In most states you can order your birth certificate in person, by telephone, mail or online. In addition to ordering it directly through a state government, you can order birth certificates from most U.S. jurisdictions through a private company, VitalChek.com. There is an additional fee, though the processing time may be faster.

U.S. citizens born abroad can order copies of their Consular Report of Birth Abroad from the U.S. Department of State.

TLDEF does not maintain information on how to order birth certificates for people born outside of the U.S. Please contact the local consulate or the vital records department of your country of birth for information on how to obtain your birth certificate.
