TLDEF Thanks Governor Cuomo for Reiterating Commitment to Transgender Rights
New York, NY - The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund today expressed appreciation to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for his recent letter to the Empire State Pride Agenda, reaffirming his commitment to protecting the rights of transgender people in New York.
Statement from Executive Director Michael Silverman:
“We are grateful to Governor Cuomo for voicing his support for the transgender community and reiterating his commitment to push for comprehensive protections for transgender New Yorkers. The Governor’s comments come on the heels of his administration’s welcome announcement in June that it had updated New York’s outdated birth certificate policy, removing barriers to transgender people obtaining accurate ID.
“We urge the Governor to work diligently to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) during the next legislative session. It is time to ensure that transgender New Yorkers have full protection under the law in employment, housing, and public accommodations. As Governor Cuomo stated in his letter, ‘[i]t is no secret that transgender New Yorkers experience pervasive discrimination in all areas of life.’ We support his efforts to remedy this situation once and for all, and we applaud the Empire State Pride Agenda for its leadership on this issue. We look forward to working side by side with ESPA and the Cuomo administration to continue educating the public about the importance of transgender equality.”
